Paeonia (Tree Peony)
PLANTING..
Grow in full sun. Plants need evenly moist but well-drained soil with a pH close to neutral. If your soil is extremely
acid, add a few handfuls of lime at planting time. Take care to plant at the same soil depth as previously grown
or plant the top of the graft union, which appears as a bulge on the main stem, about 3-4" below the surface
of the soil.
PRUNING..
The only regular pruning required is to remove deadwood after the plants leaf out in spring. Also, remove spent
flowers. Tree Peonies are grafted onto Herbaceous Peony roots and occasionally a shoot from the rootstock will
push through the soil. Such shoots should be removed.
GROWTH..
Tree Peonies need some time to settle in before they bloom; it's not unusual for a plant to wait until its third
spring before it flowers. In addition, Tree Peonies are often slow to break dormancy the first spring after planting.
FERTILIZING..
Tree Peonies respond well to an annual top dressing of 1" of compost; no other fertilization is necessary.
WINTER PROTECTION..
In cold-winter climates Zones 4-6, provide winter protection. Cover plants with an inverted basket or burlap screen.
Paeonia (Double Peony)
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Space approximately 18-30" apart. If
your soil is extremely acid, add a few handfuls of lime at planting time. Don't be surprised if there are few or
no flowers the first spring after planting; plants generally take a few years to settle in and bloom heavily.
Peonies respond well to an annual top dressing of 1" of compost. Many Peonies, the double-flowered varieties
in particular, must be staked their blooms from resting in the soil. Set the supports in place as new growth begins
to emerge in early spring.
To prevent diseases, cut the plants down almost to the ground after the first frost and dispose of the them. Peonies
resent disturbance, but if you must move a plant, the best time to do so is in the fall. |
