Begonia tuberous
Tuberous Begonias are frost-tender plants that thrive where they receive bright light but little or no direct sun. Given an early start, they put on a glorious display all summer long. In spring, plant them out after the last threat of night frost. In fall dig up the bulbs before the first night frost and store them. Begonias can grow in pots, hanging baskets, or in the ground (once the danger of frost has passed).

SOIL PREPARATION: Tuberous begonias can survive in many types of soils, though drainage is important. Purchase "potting soil" from your local nursery for container grown begonias. For outdoor beds use an average garden soil. Add humus and sand to heavy clay-type soil. Or add peat moss to very sandy soil, however, large amounts of peat moss are not recommended.

STARTING TUBERS: It is important that a sprout appears before the tuber is planted. If your tubers seem slow to sprout, move them from the cool storage area to a warm dark place. When sprouts appear, the tubers are ready to be planted.
1. Fill a nursery flat or similar shallow container with the planting medium. The planting medium should be loose, well drained and it should not contain fertilizer or manure.
2. Space the sprouted tubers evenly in the flat allowing 4-6" between tubers. Bury the tubers with a thin layer of soil however it is essential that tubers are completely covered as the roots develop from the top & sides of the tubers.
3. Watered thoroughly so that the medium is uniformly moist. Do not over water.
4. Place the planted flat in a warm place where it receives filtered sunlight. A temperature of 60-70 degrees is ideal. The flat should not be watered again until the surface of the soil begins to show dryness. As the plants develop, they will need water more often and in increasing amounts. It is important to keep the tubers in the flat until the roots are well developed. When the plants have made 4-5" of growth and the root mass is well developed, they should be transplanted. Do not allow the plants to become crowded or spindly in the flat.

Transplanting - After the first two leaves have emerged, and all danger of frost has past transplant tubers into a lightly shaded outdoor bed or patio container. Lift and move the tubers carefully to avoid damaging the roots, and set the top of each tuber 1-2" below the surface of the potting mix or garden soil. Begonias planted in the ground should be positioned so that the points of the leaves aim at the viewer, because the blooms will face the same direction.

Staking - When upright varieties are 6" tall, push a stake into the potting mix or garden soil on the side of the plant opposite the points of the leaves. Place the stake a few inches away from the main stem to avoid injuring the tuber. Fasten the plant to the stake with twine.

Summer care - Tuberous Begonias thrive in soil that is evenly moist but well drained. Soggy soil can cause the stems to snap off at the tuber. Fertilize plants once a month with organic water-soluble fertilizer, follow the directions on the container. Keep plants free of spent flowers.

Over-wintering - Allow plants to grow through November (or until frost) to store energy for the next season. Force container-grown plants into dormancy by gradually withholding water. Dig plants grown in the ground with a ball of soil and let them dry out in a shed or on the garage floor. When the stems break free from the tubers, shake off excess soil. Then store them in dry peat moss in open flats in a cool 45-50°, dry place. Replant the tubers again in late winter.

Hanging Basket Begonias - require the same care as upright Begonias, except that they do not need staking. One Begonia tuber in a 12" hanging pot makes a spectacular & long-lasting display.
Please note: If the stems of a Hanging Basket Begonia grow upright and refuse to trail over the edge of the container, plants may not be receiving enough light.

a little history about tuberous begonia...
The Begonia genus consists of hundreds of species but only the tuberous begonias are available from bloomin' on the East End. Modern tuberous begonias are the creation of horticulturists and are botanical described as Begonia tuberhybrida. No other flower has so many ancestors as these large-flowered hybrids descended from tropical South America.
The name Begonia comes from Michel Bégon (1638 - 1710), born in San Domingo, later governor of Canada, who was very active in botany. When Charles Plumier, a French botanist and monk, described the first Begonia in the early 1700s, he chose to honor Mr. Bégon by naming the Begonia for him.
